Krouse Rosenthal’s series of three “Cookies” books, with a fourth on the way, teaches children the meanings behind weighty words and concepts, such as “compassionate” and “requited.”

“Kids can learn a big word as easy as they can learn a small word. It’s just a matter of how you explain it,” Krouse Rosenthal said. The books explain the concept through cookies, such as “Patient means waiting and waiting for the cookies to be done” or “Polite means, ‘Excuse me, can you please pass the cookies?
