** Our focus in the Math Lab will be based on the Math Common Core Standards. I will work to strengthen my students' foundation in math through fluency activities and by offering varied strategies for solving problems. Emphasis will be placed on mathematical insight, reasoning skills and problem-solving. Other aspects of math instruction will include building number sense and giving my students the opportunity to experience real life connections to math.**

Students participate in Math Lab based on teacher recommendation and Assessment data. The students meet in a small group setting at a table in their own classroom. I will "push in" and meet with them five times in a six day cycle. This special program is designed to help each student in a way that is supportive of the classroom curriculum and most importantly; enjoyable for them. Students will participate in fluency activities, designed to provide a foundation for the modules they will be working on in math class and they will receive more individualized attention when needed.

COMMON CORE MATH CURRICULUM

The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that all students should develop. Math Lab lessons will focus on the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice.

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.

3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

4. Model with Mathematics.

5. Use appropriate tools strategically.

6. Attend to precision.

7. Look for structure.

8. Express regularity in repeated reasoning.

**Grade Two Common Core Standards in Mathematics** will focus on four critical areas: extending the understanding of base-ten notation, building fluency with addition and subtraction, using standard units of measure and describing and analyzing shapes.

**Grade Three Common Core Standards in Mathematics** will focus onFour critical areas: developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100, developing understanding of fractions,especially unit fractions, developing the understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and area and describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes.

**Grade Four Common Core Standards in Mathematics** will focus on three critical areas: developing understanding and fluency with multi-digit multiplication and developing understanding of dividing to find quotients involving multi-digit dividends, developing an understanding of fraction equivalance, addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators, and multiplication of fractions by whole numbers, and understanding that geometric figures can be analyzed and classified based on their properties, such as having parallel sides, perpendicular sides, particular angle measurements and symmetry.

**Grade Five Common Core Standards in Mathematics** will focus on these critical areas: applying an understanding of fractions and fraction models to represent the addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators as equivalent calculations with like denominators. Make reasonable estimates of sums and differences of fractions and explore multiplication and division of fractions. Applying understandings of models for decimals, decimal notation and properties of operations to add and subtract decimals to hundredths. Compute products and quotients of decimals to hundredths efficiently. Recognize volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space and decompose these shapes and find volumes of right rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed into layers of arays of cubes.
