Karpeles Document: Connecticut's Charter Oak

In 1687, a representative for the King James II demanded the surrender of Connecticut’s government by confiscating the colony’s Charter. In a dramatic turn of events, Captain Joseph Wadsworth hid Connecticut’s Charter in a nearby white oak tree. Even today, hundreds of years after the great tree fell in a storm, this tree remains a symbol of the state of Connecticut.
