Any teacher receiving teacher certification after February, 2004, must complete 175 hours of professional development.  For those teachers that received their professional certificate effective September 2004, your 75 professional development will be due to the State Education Department on September 2010.  Here after, teachers with a professional certificate will be required to log 175 hours of professional development hours in five years.  For more information about this State requirement, please click here.

 

1.   What’s in your students’ emotional backpack? A Sensitivity Training Workshop for Faculty and Staff
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    Each year, in preparation of going back to school, children and teens of all ages thoughtfully select the backpacks in which they carry books, school supplies and other materials they need for school. While the supplies and materials that your students carry in his or her physical backpack are important, what is in their “emotional backpack” is just as important to helping them start a positive and successful new school year. Some of the topics we will discuss: Family Stress Divorce/Loss Child Abuse Domestic Violence Mental Illness Drugs and Alcohol Trauma/Difficult Life Circumstances Bullying (social, cyber, physical) DASA (Dignity for All Students Act)

2.   Dealing with Difficult Situations
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    The objective of this workshop is to develop basic understanding of mental illness and substance abuse disorders that present as “difficult” or resistant behaviors in students and families. This will create an interactive discussion identifying the characteristics of those who have difficulties working staff members and the development of strategies to improve communication.

3. Added in the past 14 days Social Studies Mini-Lecture
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    Social Studies mini-lectures will support teachers in delivering content in a concise manner. Intermediate grade teachers received training on the framing model, which also helps them to organize content curricula. After participating in the Social Studies Minilecture Workshop: • Teachers will be able to create their own mini-lectures in any subject on any topic. • Teachers will be able to focus on the salient details they want their students to learn. At the conclusion of this workshop, the participants will demonstrate mastery of course material by planning and sharing their own Social Studies Mini-lecture. This course will positively impact student learning by keeping the direct instruction brief and focused.

4.   Teen Depression and Suicide Awareness
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    This workshop will help staff members to recognize the symptoms and warning signs of depression and suicide. It will provide valuable facts, statistics and information regarding the services that are available. Knowledge and awareness of these signs and symptoms will better serve the children in our schools and keep them safe.

5. Added in the past 14 days Assessment to Drive Instruction During an Interactive Read-Aloud
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    The Assessment to Drive Instruction During an Interactive Read-Aloud workshop will support teachers, grades 2-5, to create small groups based on their response to a whole class lesson. After participating in the Assessment to Drive Instruction During an Interactive Read Aloud workshop: • Teachers will know how to form small groups based upon students’ responses to a whole class lesson. • Teachers will know how to meet students where they are in a small group and then guide them to grow. • Teachers will brainstorm a unit of study that they would like to try this in their class. At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will demonstrate mastery of course material by planning and sharing a unit of study that they would like to use data to form their small group instruction. This course will positively impact students tackling complex texts and their reading comprehension.

Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    The TenMarks Math Webinar will support teachers to differentiate students work in mathematics. TenMarks Math currently supports differentiation and the use of technology in the classrooms. After participating in the TenMarks Math Webinar, teachers will know how to assign differentiated assignments to students. Participants will be able to demonstrate an understanding from the webinar by creating a TenMarks Math class and using the data reports to differentiate instruction. This course will positively impact student learning by giving them extra time to practice math concepts in schools and at home.

7.   Primary Comprehension Toolkit
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    Primary Comprehension Tooklit will support teachers grades 1-2 with a nonfiction reading kit that was purchased for them to implement whole class lessons during the reading block. After participating in Primary Comprehension Toolkit, the teachers will have a strong picture of how to implement the six comprehension straggles modeled in the kit. Teachers will know how to plan for the materials, management, timing, and instruction involved in the Primary Comprehension Toolkit. Teachers will plan and share a lesson within each strategy cluster with the group.

8. Added in the past 14 days Class Website Creation Using NY Learns
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    If you’ve always wanted to develop a simple, maintenance free website for your class or subject area, this course will teach you how to use a website builder tool in our new district resource - New York Learns. As FrontPage is eventually phased out in June 2012, this new alternative is a simpler way to create a class website. Input your content and NY Learns builds the website for you with just a few clicks of the mouse.

9. Added in the past 14 days I’ve Got a StarBoard! Now what?
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    If you are new to the interactive StarBoards, or just need a refresher and a little time to create some lessons, join us for three morning classes designed to show teachers how to use the basic tools of both StarBoard and Easiteach programs. You will learn how to create interactive lessons for use on your boards as well as learn how to import your existing digital content into one or both of these programs. * This course will be geared towards early childhood/elementary teachers, but all are welcome to attend.

10.   APPR - Workshop - New Observation/Evaluation Guidelines
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    The first meeting of this workshop will review the law and rationale for the new observation guidelines, compare our old observation/evaluation to the new aligned APPR Danielson rubric and explain the different sections of the observation/evaluation. During the second meeting of this workshop a video clip will be shown of how teachers are going to be evaluated. The Growth Model will be reviewed as well, which charts a teacher's effectiveness from from ineffective to distinguished. The third meeting of this workshop will provide a full explanation of the entire APPR evaluation (end of year review) by dividing and explaining each domain.

11.   RAZKIDS K-2

RAZKIDS will help teachers to incorporate technology in the reading block and build a stronger home/school connection. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to ask the presenter questions to clarify any questions they are experiencing since their first introduction and experience with the product. 13.   Testing as a Genre
Program: Lynbrook Teacher Center
    Testing as a Genre is a workshop that will support grades 3-5 teachers with testing preparation in an authentic matter. After participating in the workshop, teachers will see how they can use their non-test-prep materials to prepare students for the ELA exam. Teachers will also know how to plan for materials to deliver authentic test-preparation and they will use data to drive their authentic lessons. Teachers will also be able to plan a "Testing as a Genre" lesson.
